Meeting Room Furniture

The configuration of your meeting room furniture is important to get right, and it can often be a tricky task which requires careful planning. It must take into consideration the size and shape of the available space whilst also ensuring that the room's function is catered for; is it primarily there for a presenter to deliver speeches, product pitches or training sessions or is it more likely to be a conference room where all attendees have a role to play in discussing the issues at hand?

Bearing all of these factors in mind, and the likelihood that the room will probably serve multiple functions at some time or other, there are several options when it comes to choosing meeting room furniture. We have provided a short guide to some of these options below:

For meeting rooms with a focus on presentations and training delivery:

  • Classroom layout - rows of tables and chairs which all face the front (or some other focal point) of the room. Attendee interaction is limited with this layout. Generally works well in medium to large rooms, but can easily be used in small rooms, depending on the size of the desks themselves.
  • U-Shape layout - tables and chairs arranged in a U with the presenter delivering from the top. Allows for audio-visual aids to be positioned in the centre. Allows for greater group participation where idea exchange is important. Best suited in rectangular rooms.

For meeting rooms where all attendees have a role:

  • Banquet layout - round tables arranged neatly around the room. Generally each table seats 8-10 people. Great for training sessions where problem-solving in groups is a part of the sessions. Doesn't allow for good communication between the entire room.
  • Boardroom layout - the classic rectangle table with all participants facing inwards allowing for optimal participant interaction.
  • Hollow square layout - similar to the U-shape, except in this case the 4th side of the U is closed off to form a rectangle/square. The advantage with this layout is that the hollow-shape can be extended to fit large rooms, making it ideal for a conference or brain storming session where a greater number of participants is necessary. The open space in the middle of the tables can be utilised to showcase products or offer demonstrations.
